On July 4th, local time, President Donald Trump stated that
the U.S. government would begin sending letters to trade partners starting from the day after tomorrow, setting
new tariffs “almost certain” to take effect on August 1st.
Trump mentioned that starting from the 4th, the United States would send letters to multiple countries, expecting “10 or 12 letters” to be sent out on the same day, with more letters expected to be sent in the coming days. Trump said he expects all these letters to be delivered by the 9th.
Previously, Trump had set July 9th as the deadline for tariff negotiations.
Regarding the new tariffs set, Trump said,
“The tariff rates could range from 60%, 70% to 10%, 20%.”
Trump stated, “We have completed the final text of the letters, which will essentially explain how much tariffs these countries will pay.”
According to CNN, it is currently unclear which countries will receive these letters, but Trump has previously criticized some trading partners, including the European Union and Japan, for being too aggressive during negotiations. This week, Trump threatened to send a letter to “pampered” Japan, setting its tariff rate at up to 35%.
In April this year, Trump imposed a “countervailing” tariff of up to 50% on most of his trade partners in the United States. Bloomberg reported that if the new tariffs are higher than the so-called “countervailing” tariffs, it would increase the inflation risk for the U.S. economy. CNN noted that a 50% tariff in April caused the U.S. stock market to enter a bearish zone, leading to significant sell-offs in U.S. stocks and bonds, with a 70% tariff exceeding this level.
Trump’s tariff policy has impacted the global economy.
