On July 7th, local time, a White House official was asked about tariffs on Japan and South Korea and stated that the United States would not apply tariffs on specific countries above industry tariffs.
According to the “Global Trade Alert” tracking agency, “tariff stacking” refers to applying multiple tariffs on the same import product, resulting in “cumulative tariffs.”
The Global Trade Alert noted that President Trump’s Executive Order No. 14289 signed on May 2 established the rules for tariff stacking, stating that “certain tariff mechanisms take precedence over others and cannot be applied cumulatively.” (Cao Jian)
