On July 9th, local time, President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on eight countries on social media.
Trump declared that starting from August 1, 2025, the United States will impose a 20% tariff on products from the Philippines, a 25% tariff on those from Brunei and Moldova, a 30% tariff on those from Algeria, Iraq, Sri Lanka, and Libya, and a 50% tariff on those from Brazil.
Brazilian Vice President: Imposing Tariffs Unfairly
On the same day, Brazilian Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, stated that the announcement by the US to impose new tariffs on Brazilian goods is unfair. He mentioned that while the US has a trade surplus with Brazil, it still faces increased tariffs, which he believes there is “no reason” for the US to do so.
Alckmin also pointed out that imposing tariffs on Brazilian products would harm the US economy itself, as trade is integrated in the sector. Taking steel as an example: Brazil is the third-largest buyer of coal used in metallurgy in the US, producing semi-finished products before exporting them for final processing in the US. Therefore, imposing tariffs would only make the US’s own industrial chain more expensive.
