Following the United States’ announcement of imposing a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods starting from August 1, Brazilian President Lula stated in an interview on July 10th that Brazil would engage in tariff negotiations with the United States. If these negotiations prove ineffective, Brazil will implement countermeasures of equal measure.
Lula mentioned that Brazil would prioritize attempts at tariff negotiations and file a lawsuit against the US for unilaterally increasing tariffs with the World Trade Organization. He emphasized that if negotiations fail, Brazil would take countermeasures in accordance with the “Economic Reciprocity Law” of Brazil, imposing a 50% tariff on exported Brazilian products to the United States.
The “Economic Reciprocity Law” of Brazil came into effect in April 2025, stipulating that in response to measures that adversely affect Brazil’s international competitiveness unilaterally, commercial preferences, investment, and intellectual property rights obligations can be suspended.
On the 9th, US President Trump issued a letter to Brazilian President Lula, warning of a 50% tariff on imports from Brazil. In addition, he declared, “Lula is engaged in political persecution of former Brazilian President Bolsonaro and should stop immediately.” In response, Brazilian President Lula stated on the 9th that Brazil would not accept any form of control by anyone. Regarding the US unilateral decision to increase tariffs on Brazilian export products, Brazil will respond accordingly. (CCTV Reporter: Feng Li)
