On July 12th, local time, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Economy issued a joint statement in which it was stated that, given the United States’ announcement of a new tariff on Mexican products imported into the US at 30% starting from August 1st, the Mexican government considers this to be “unfair treatment.” The Mexican government has begun negotiations with the United States to protect border businesses and employment.
The statement mentioned that since July 11th, a “permanent bilateral working group” has been established by the Mexican delegation to address security, immigration, and economic issues with the United States. During the negotiations, the Mexican government expressed disagreement with the imposition of tariffs on Mexico, stating that it is unfair.
At the negotiation table, both parties agreed that the primary task currently is to find an alternative solution that can protect businesses and employment on both sides of the border before imposing tariffs.
Earlier that day, President Trump posted a letter on social media platforms to the Mexican President and the Chairman of the European Union Commission, announcing that starting from August 1st, 2025, the United States will impose tariffs of 30% on Mexican and EU-origin products entering the country.
