On July 14th, local time, the Supreme Court in the United States revoked a federal judge’s order and allowed the Trump administration to implement mass layoffs within the Department of Education.
In May, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to reinstate the positions of over 1,300 employees at the Department of Education, preventing the Trump administration from advancing its plan for massive layoffs within the department.
On March 20th, local time, President Trump signed an executive order demanding that Secretary of Education Linda McMahon take all necessary steps to close the Department of Education and decentralize educational management to the states. This move quickly sparked strong opposition within the American education community, with many university scholars warning that it would have a profound impact on the American education system, particularly affecting low-income and vulnerable student groups.
