On June 29th, local time, the Israel Defense Forces announced that they had recently established the 96th Infantry Division and will take full responsibility for the defense of the Jordanian border in the future.
According to a statement released by the IDF, following the outbreak of the Israeli-Iraqi conflict, the 96th Infantry Division was formed within 48 hours to strengthen the eastern border defenses. On June 20th, the division completed its first-ever division-level exercise, which included simulated drills for responding to emergencies and rapid response deployments, aimed at enhancing the readiness level of the division. This exercise was jointly implemented by the IDF and several security agencies as well as local governments to enhance multi-party combat capabilities.
As revealed by Israeli media, the 96th Infantry Division is codenamed “Gilad”.
Originally scheduled for deployment on August 1st this year, due to the outbreak of the Israeli-Iraqi conflict, the division was urgently formed within 48 hours and quickly took over the defense of the northern region of the Jordan Valley. The division will be responsible for the defense line from the trilateral area between Israel, Jordan, and Syria to the southern Lamon Airport in Israel, including parts of the West Bank of Jordan.
