Trump unveils “major” statement on Russia
On the 14th, local time, U.S. President Trump met with NATO Secretary General Lutterbach at the Oval Office in the White House, announcing what he had previously hinted at as a “major” statement concerning Russia.
Trump stated that if Russia fails to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine within 50 days, the United States will impose “very strict” tariffs on Russia.
A White House official later explained to the media that Trump meant that if Russia and Ukraine fail to reach an agreement within 50 days, the United States will impose a 100% tariff on Russia, along with secondary tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil. The official did not elaborate further on the secondary tariffs.
Trump also mentioned that the United States would provide military assistance to Ukraine through NATO, with the cost of these weapons being paid by NATO taxpayers rather than American taxpayers. Some equipment, including the Patriot air defense missile system, would be delivered to Ukraine “very quickly,” expected to arrive within “a few days.” He added that some European countries would transfer their own Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine.
