A recent survey report released by a think tank on the 17th shows that public support for the “special relationship” between the UK and the US has “collapsed.”
The report suggests that amidst uncertainty and the volatile nature of American policies, “returning to Europe” appears to be a more secure option. The findings from the diplomatic policy organization indicate that trust in the United States has plummeted from 53% in 2024 to 38% in 2025, with 33% of respondents viewing President Trump’s actions as one of the main threats to national security. There is a clear trend towards “returning to Europe.” As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues, the impacts of Brexit are becoming increasingly apparent, and with the United States continuously shrinking its global role, an increasing number of people are reaffirming their identity as Europeans.
Over sixty percent of respondents believe that due to Trump’s style of conduct,
a closer relationship with the EU should be established. Additionally, about eighty percent of respondents support the agreements reached at this year’s May summit between the UK and the EU, including strengthening defense and security cooperation and reducing trade barriers in food and beverages.
“If I had voted for Brexit again, I would vote for returning to the EU,” said Molly Tapp from Liverpool, who told Xinhua News Agency. The approach of American leaders is leading to more and more people establishing closer connections with the EU.
Ian Scott, an expert on American history at Manchester University, told Xinhua News Agency that the aggressive and transactional style of the US is at odds with its political culture. “This has created a sense of alienation among the public towards America as a whole,” he said.
