It has been reported that the disaster management department of Bihar, India, stated on the 18th local time that in the past 48 hours, thunderstorms have caused at least 34 deaths and 6 injuries across various locations in the state.
India experiences its monsoon season from June to September each year, where thunderstorms are common. According to statistics from the Bihar government, there were at least 243 deaths due to lightning strikes in 2024 and 275 in 2023.
Last year, a research team led by Fakhru Mohan University of奥迪沙邦 in India warned that due to climate change, the number of fatal lightning strikes in the country has significantly increased over the decades.
The report states that global warming has led to an increase in extreme weather conditions, with the number of lightning strikes occurring annually in India increasing, becoming one of the main causes of natural disasters triggered by climate change, “the occurrence of lightning strikes in India is becoming increasingly difficult to predict.”
Researchers also mentioned that inadequate warning systems and a lack of awareness about safety measures are reasons for the high mortality rate in lightning strikes in India. (CCTV Yue Ruixin)
