On July 21, local time, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the withdrawal of 700 Marines from their mission in Los Angeles. A spokesperson for the Department of Defense, Sean Pence, stated that with the situation in Los Angeles stabilizing, the Secretary of Defense has instructed the redeployment of these 700 Marines.
Last week, the Department of Defense decided to withdraw about half of the 4,000 National Guard members sent to Los Angeles.
Federal agencies such as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deployed a large number of law enforcement personnel on June 6 and 7, conducting raids across various locations in Los Angeles County targeting illegal immigrants. These operations resulted in severe conflicts with local community residents over two consecutive days. On June 7, President Trump signed a presidential memorandum ordering the Department of Defense to mobilize California’s National Guard to the Los Angeles area without requesting additional support from Governor Newsom.
