On the 22nd, the Hyojae District Court in South Korea decided to postpone the trial of President Moon Jae-myung’s suspected case involving a transfer of funds to North Korea. Consequently, all five criminal cases involving Moon Jae-myung have been postponed.
During the seventh pre-trial meeting held by the Hyojae District Court on the same day, concerning the suspicions of third-party bribery and violations of the “Specific Crimes Enhancing Punishment Act” by Lee Jae-won, former Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Peace Affairs in Gyeonggi Province, and others, including charges related to the alleged misuse of the “Foreign Exchange Law,” “Korea-North Korea Exchange Cooperation Law,” and other issues, it was decided to reschedule the trial of these cases for a later date.
The South Korean prosecutors believe that during his tenure as Gyeonggi Province Chief Magistrate from 2019, Moon Jae-myung conspired with Lee Jae-won to request a company to pay his visit to North Korea expenses amounting to $3 million in total, which should have been covered by the Gyeonggi Province government, and also requested payment of $5 million for the North Korea Smart Farm project, amounting to a total of $8 million; he was prosecuted in June last year.
In his written statement submitted to the prosecutors, Moon Jae-myung stated that demanding the Gyeonggi Province government to transfer funds to North Korea constitutes a serious crime that could ruin his political career and personal life, and is an act of anti-national behavior. There is no reason for him or the Gyeonggi Province government to engage in such unprofitable criminal activities.
As a result, the retrial of the “Public Office Elections Act” case, the real estate fraud case, the embezzlement case, and the trial of the transfer of funds to North Korea case, as well as the second-instance trial of the incitement of false testimony case, have all been postponed. The trial date for the second instance of the incitement of false testimony case has not yet been set after May 12 this year. (CCTV Reporter: Zhang Yun)
