On July 27th, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to questions regarding the conflict at the Cambodian-Thai border.
Question: Following international mediation efforts, both Cambodia and Thailand have expressed a positive desire for a ceasefire recently. However, ongoing localized fighting persists. What is China’s stance on this?
Answer: Cambodia and Thailand are inseparable neighbors, both friendly countries of China. Adhering to good neighborliness and managing differences appropriately aligns with the fundamental and long-term interests of both sides, contributing to regional peace and stability. China deeply regrets the loss of life among the people of Cambodia and Thailand due to the conflict and extends sincere condolences. It hopes that both parties can start from the common interests of their peoples, upholding the spirit of seeking harmony and being benevolent towards neighbors, maintain calmness and restraint, quickly reach a ceasefire, resolve differences through dialogue and consultation, and restore peace and stability in the border region as soon as possible.
Both Cambodia and Thailand are important members of ASEAN. In recent days, ASEAN has actively promoted a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, which China appreciates and welcomes all efforts that contribute to de-escalation. China will continue to maintain a fair and impartial stance, closely communicate with Cambodia and Thailand, actively promote peace talks, and play a constructive role in facilitating a ceasefire.
