[Report by Li Ziyu] According to Sky News UK, on the 28th, British Commerce and Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds revealed in an interview with the media that the UK government will recognize the State of Palestine during this parliamentary term. He also warned that this move should not be merely “symbolic.”
Reynolds stated in the interview that British ministers “hope” and “will” recognize the State of Palestine.
“The question is how we can leverage this to bring a substantive breakthrough to the real peace process?” Reynolds asked.
“I know many countries around the world have done this. To be honest, it has not stopped us from discussing the harrowing scenes we talked about this morning,” Reynolds added. “So we must use this moment—you can only do it once. We need to utilize it in a way that can achieve the breakthrough we need. And the United States is crucial in this.”
Previously, Prime Minister Starmer issued a statement on July 25 local time regarding the situation in Gaza, condemning Israel’s military escalation and obstruction of humanitarian aid in Gaza. Starmer expressed Britain’s desire to promote peace and urgently demanded a ceasefire. He mentioned, “recognizing the State of Palestine is one step.”
Following the outbreak of the current conflict between Israel and Palestine in October 2023, Spain, Norway, Ireland, Slovenia, and several non-European countries announced their recognition of the State of Palestine. French President Emmanuel Macron posted on social media on July 24 this year, stating that France would officially recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September this year.
