After U.S. President Trump publicly proposed that Russia and Ukraine should directly sign a peace agreement rather than a ceasefire agreement, Ukrainian President Zelensky stated on social media late at night on August 16 that a ceasefire is a crucial element for ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Zelensky’s post stated that he was preparing for his meeting with Trump in Washington D.C. on the 18th and coordinating with relevant parties. “All parties agree that dialogue at the leadership level is needed to clarify all details and determine which steps are necessary and feasible.”
Zelensky also accused Russia of “repeatedly refusing calls for a ceasefire,” not having made a decision on a ceasefire, and lacking the willingness to do so, which “makes the situation more complicated.” He wrote, “Ending the killing is a key element of a truce.” (Xinhua News Agency)
