On July 3rd, local time, the Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Hajime Jefferies, delivered a marathon-like speech in “Magic Minute” to protest President Trump’s push for a “big and beautiful” tax and spending bill. The “Magic Minute” is essentially an untimed opportunity for speaking, with Jefferies’ actual speech lasting approximately 8 hours and 46 minutes, setting a new record for the longest speech in modern American history in the House of Representatives.
It was reported that Jefferies began his lengthy speech at 4:53 AM Eastern Time, and during his speech, he shared stories about Americans who would be impacted by the medical assistance reform and other cuts within the “big and beautiful” bill. Around 1:39 PM on the same day, Jefferies’ speech concluded.
The previous record for the longest House speech was set by California Republican Kevin McCarthy in 2021, when his speech lasted 8 hours and 32 minutes. (Xu Tao)
