According to a report by the American “Newsweek” website on June 28, Germany urgently deployed fighter jets on June 27 to intercept a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. This incident, known as the “North Atlantic Lake,” involved Russian forces for the latest time.
The German “Bild” reported that an Ilyushin-20M reconnaissance aircraft flew over the area without turning on its transponder or submitting a flight plan before it was urgently dispatched by German military aircraft.
NATO member states reported an increase in hostile actions between Russia and the region, marking the latest instance. Since Sweden and Finland joined NATO, the Baltic Sea has been referred to as the “North Atlantic Lake.” Given the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad is located within this area, and with tensions with Moscow escalating, the region holds strategic military significance.
As per the “Bild” report, around 9 a.m. on June 27, the Russian aircraft took off from Kaliningrad, shutting down its transponder and not submitting a flight plan.
While flying towards Poland and near Germany, NATO radar detected it and alerted the German military. The Federal Armed Forces of Germany urgently dispatched two European fighter jets from Rastendorf Air Base near Rostock.
The report stated that the two fighter jets visually contacted the Russian aircraft about 60 miles from the German coast. The Russian aircraft then changed its course and remained in international airspace. German fighters returned to their base shortly after 11 a.m.
Just weeks ago, British fighter jets stationed in Poland intercepted two Russian reconnaissance aircraft. (Translated by Wang Haifang)
