At around 1 a.m. on June 29th local time, former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol left the location of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), marking the end of the first day of investigation into the emergency martial law imposed on him and subsequent allegations of using the presidential security services to resist arrest.
The investigation officially commenced at approximately 10:14 a.m. local time on the 28th. The SIT initially focused on Yoon’s resistance to arrest through the security services, but later, Yoon’s side raised objections to the identity of the investigators from the SIT, claiming that police officers involved in “illegal arrest” of Yoon should not be members of the SIT. They demanded the replacement of the investigators. Following this, the two sides remained in a standoff for several hours on the 28th, before resuming the investigation around 4:45 p.m. local time on the 28th, focusing on the circumstances surrounding the issuance of an emergency martial law by the State Council during Yoon’s announcement. The investigation continued until around 9:50 p.m. that day, followed by a process of verifying the investigation records. After reading the investigation records, Yoon made some amendments and completed the verification process before leaving the SIT.
Due to Yoon’s initial refusal to cooperate during the investigation, it was impossible to complete all aspects of the inquiry within one session. Consequently, Yoon has been asked to continue his investigation with the SIT on the 30th.
