On the afternoon of June 29th local time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended a temporary closed-door hearing at the Jerusalem District Court to discuss his recent request to postpone his trial by two weeks. After discussion,
the judge cancelled the originally scheduled hearing for next week.
The court decided not to cancel the hearing scheduled for the following week but indicated that it would consider the reasonable request submitted.
Amit Hadad, Netanyahu’s defense lawyer, told the court that after the war with Iran, Netanyahu needed to postpone the trial to address “primary diplomatic, national, and security issues.”
Previously, Netanyahu’s first request was rejected due to lack of details. Hadad submitted to the court a schedule of Netanyahu’s upcoming two weeks as proof, but the judges still stated that the information and details provided were insufficient to justify the request.
Previously, US President Donald Trump claimed that the trial against Netanyahu should be canceled because it “interferes with efforts to end the Gaza War and release hostages, as well as diplomatic efforts with Iran.”
It is reported that the cross-examination of Netanyahu began on June 3rd and is expected to take one year to complete.
At the beginning of 2020, the Israeli prosecutors formally charged Netanyahu with bribery, fraud, and breach of public trust. In May of the same year, the court held its first hearing on the case, making Netanyahu Israel’s first sitting prime minister to undergo judicial proceedings. On December 10th, 2024, Netanyahu appeared in court for the first time in connection with a suspected corruption case. According to media reports from Israel, if convicted, Netanyahu could face up to 10 years in prison for bribery and a total of three years for fraud and breach of public trust.
