Today (June 30th), Park Sang-hyun, a member of the National Assembly from the Democratic Party of Korea and the executive officer of the Information Committee in the National Assembly, announced at a meeting held in the parliament that military sources revealed that last October, North Korea accused South Korea of sending drones to invade Pyongyang. Park stated that the military’s internal sources indicated that the commander of the South Korean Air Force’s drone operations had directly ordered the related actions at the time. He mentioned that the gravity of the issue lies in the fact that then-President Yoon Suk Yeol and then-Defense Minister Kim Ryoo-hyun attempted to use the drone incident as an opportunity to prompt North Korea to attack South Korea, thereby “using this as a pretext for initiating an emergency martial law.”
However, in response to Park’s statement, the South Korean military maintained its consistent stance, stating “we cannot confirm it.”
Last October, North Korea publicly accused South Korea of launching drones into its airspace and flying them over Pyongyang city to distribute “anti-North Korean leaflets.” However, the South Korean military continuously denied these allegations. Following the emergency martial law incident on December 3rd last year, public opinion in South Korea revealed numerous clues suggesting that the Yoon Suk Yeol administration was indeed responsible for leading this matter.
The case involving the initiation of the emergency martial law by Yoon Suk Yeol has been handed over to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for investigation. Besides investigating whether the emergency martial law was committed in violation of the “Internal Disorders Law,” whether the drone incident in Pyongyang was indeed carried out by the South Korean military, and whether it constituted an “External Enemy Crime” are also within the purview of the “Internal Disorders Special Investigation Act” under investigation by the SIT. In the first face-to-face investigation conducted by the SIT against Yoon Suk Yeol on June 28th, this aspect was also a key focus of the investigation. After the conclusion of the initial investigation, the SIT stated there were still many aspects unexamined, and they have requested Yoon Suk Yeol to continue appearing before the investigation on July 1st.
