Since June 21, the earthquake activity in the Tugular Islands and their vicinity in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, has been frequent. As of the afternoon of June 30, over 660 minor earthquakes have been recorded, with the highest magnitude reaching 5.1. The seismic activity continues. Consequently, local tourism activities have been temporarily suspended.
Tugular Islands, located in the southern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, consist of 12 islands, seven of which are inhabited. Since June 21, more than 660 felt earthquakes have been detected, including several reaching a magnitude of 5.1. Currently, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage caused by these earthquakes.
From the perspective of earthquake frequency, on June 22 and 23, over 100 earthquakes were monitored, followed by a decrease until June 26, when it dropped to 15. However, from June 28 onwards, the frequency increased again, with 94 recorded on June 29.
The local meteorological department stated that the seismic activity is still ongoing and urged the public to prepare for strong earthquakes. Island residents expressed that the frequent earthquakes severely impact daily life, causing fatigue and unease.
Due to the continuous earthquakes in Tugular Islands, rumors about the so-called “Tugular Law” have become a hot topic on Japanese social media. This claim suggests that after frequent earthquakes in Tugular Islands, large-scale earthquakes will occur in other parts of Japan. Several Japanese scholars have refuted this notion. Hiroshi Yokoyama, Associate Professor of Marine and Volcanology at Hiroshima University, said that the rumor lacks scientific basis.
