Today, the Constitutional Court of Thailand decided to accept the impeachment petition against Prime Minister Prachate and suspended her from her duties. On June 20th, the Speaker of the Upper House of the Thai Parliament submitted an impeachment petition to the Constitutional Court, alleging that the content of a phone call between Prachate and the Chairman of the Cambodian Senate, Hun Sen, violates the constitution and ethical standards.
Recently, tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border have escalated due to a boundary dispute. Media in both Thailand and Cambodia reported on June 18th about a recording of a phone conversation between Prachate and Hun Sen, during which Prachate requested Hun Sen’s assistance to ease tensions at the border. Hun Sen later confirmed on social media that he had spoken with Prachate recently.
The Thai Prime Minister is embroiled in a “phonegate” scandal.
