It has been learned that Qatar has submitted a new proposal to Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) regarding the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, aiming for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of some detainees. Specifically, eight individuals will be released on the first day of the ceasefire, and another two on the 50th day. Furthermore, the proposal also requests that Hamas return the bodies of 18 deceased detainees in three batches.
According to an Israeli official, this proposal could create conditions for discussions on the details of the agreement among all parties involved. He also mentioned that even if negotiations resume between Israel and Hamas, they would be extremely difficult and expected to be protracted.
After multiple mediation efforts, a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip was reached between Hamas and Israel on January 15, with the first phase lasting from January 19 to March 1. The second phase of ceasefire negotiations was originally scheduled to begin on February 3, but both sides have been unable to advance to substantive talks. Israel, citing Hamas’ refusal to accept the subsequent ceasefire plan proposed by the U.S. government and the release of its detainees, resumed large-scale airstrikes and ground operations in the Gaza Strip starting from March 18. On June 1, Qatar and Egypt issued a joint statement indicating their continued efforts to bridge the differences among the parties and achieve a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
