On July 1st, local time, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that
the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) would no longer provide foreign aid.
The State Department will take over the projects it wishes to continue from July 1st. Since then,
the Trump administration has officially shut down the operation of the USAID, which has been in operation for nearly 64 years. Pompeo stated that for decades, the USAID has failed to ensure that its funded projects truly align with the interests of the United States. He mentioned that, apart from building a global non-governmental organization industry综合体 using taxpayers’ money, the USAID has had little success since the end of the Cold War. The development goals have rarely been achieved, and instability has often worsened, leading to increasing anti-American sentiment. (Zhao Miao, CCTV)
Since taking office in January this year, the Trump administration has begun to dismantle several federal agencies, including the USAID. Subsequently, Pompeo was appointed as the acting director of the USAID. He announced that 83% of the agency’s projects would be canceled, while about 1000 projects would remain, to be integrated into the State Department once the USAID’s branches around the world close their doors.
Founded in November 1961, the USAID is a federal agency responsible for most of the non-military assistance abroad. According to American media reports, for a long time, the agency has funded activities such as interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the guise of foreign aid.
