On July 1st, local time, President Trump stated on Air Force One,
He did not consider extending the deadline for countries to negotiate trade agreements with the United States until July 9th. He also expressed doubts about whether Japan could reach an agreement.
Trump mentioned that he has had dealings with Japan and is uncertain about reaching a deal. He suggested that he could impose tariffs on goods imported from Japan at “30%, 35% or any number we determine,” which would be significantly higher than the tariff rate of 24% announced on April 2nd for Japanese goods.
