According to reports from Russian news agencies and other media outlets, as the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen faces a trust vote, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban shared a photo on social media X on September 9th, calling for her resignation.
In a report by The New York Times among other media outlets on September 7th, von der Leyen faced a trust vote in the European Parliament, accused of misusing EU funds among other actions. On September 9th, Orban shared a photo on social media X, featuring von der Leyen, with the caption “It’s time to go.”

Russian news agency Interfax interpreted Orban’s call for von der Leyen’s resignation.
“RT”, referring to the cover story about former U.S. President Joe Biden by The New York Times, noted that the image Orban shared was similar to the magazine’s cover for July 21st, 2024. Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race on July 21st, 2024, expressing support for nominating then-U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. The New York Times later shared the magazine’s cover for July 21st on social media X, featuring Harris; Biden was absent, leaving behind a shadow. The post also included an electronic version of the magazine’s June 28th cover from the same year, showing Biden gradually fading away.

According to previous reports by The Financial Times among other media outlets, there has been a strained relationship between Orban and von der Leyen. Orban spoke at the European Parliament last October, criticizing the EU’s policies on the Ukraine crisis and immigration issues. Von der Leyen, on the other hand, listed various grievances against Brussels, accusing it of consistently obstructing EU aid to Kyiv.
