According to Bloomberg, on July 12th local time in Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated that the United States is attempting to resume nuclear negotiations with Iran. Iran is considering these talks but “is not eager for rash negotiations.”
During a television address, Amir-Abdollahian said, “The United States insists on returning to the negotiation table, and Iran has received various messages.”
He mentioned that Iran is weighing the timing, location, and format of potential talks, but “is not eager for rash negotiations.”
Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that Iran needs assurances that if negotiations fail, it will not be attacked again. “Some assurances have already been made that war will not happen again, and we are evaluating these assurances.”
He pointed out, “If there is an opportunity to ensure the interests of the Iranian people, we will not miss it. The door to diplomacy will never close.”
Before Amir-Abdollahian made the above remarks, President Donald Trump of the United States stated on July 7th that the US had arranged talks with Iran. “They want to talk. They have suffered a crushing defeat.”
He also expressed hope to lift sanctions against Iran at an appropriate time.
On the same day, US Special Representative for Middle East Affairs John Bolton announced that talks would take place in the next week or so.
