On July 12th, local time, following the announcement by the United States that it would impose a 30% tariff on Mexico starting August 1st, Mexican President Sinaloa stated that she believes an agreement can be reached with the United States before August 1st.
In a speech at an event, Sinaloa added that sovereignty in Mexico cannot be negotiated.
Earlier that day, US President Donald Trump posted a letter to both the Mexican President and the European Commission President on social media platforms, announcing that from August 1st, 2025, the United States will impose a 30% tariff on imported products from Mexico and the European Union. Trump claimed that Mexico failed to prevent the entry of substances such as Fentanyl into the US, and also criticized Mexico for not doing enough to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Economy issued a joint statement on the same day, stating that the Mexican government views this as “unfair treatment”. The Mexican government has begun negotiations with the United States to protect border businesses and jobs.
