In the early hours of July 10th, local time, the Central District Court of Seoul, South Korea, approved the arrest application submitted by the special investigation team for internal unrest against former President Lee Jae-yong. A warrant for his arrest was issued. Lee Jae-yong was immediately taken into custody. This marks the 124th day since he was released from detention by the court on March 8th this year.
On June 6th, the special investigation team responsible for investigating emergency martial law incidents requested the court to arrest Lee Jae-yong on charges of abuse of power and other related offenses. After his arrest, the special investigation team will conduct an investigation lasting up to 20 days.
Previously, the special investigation team had stated that Lee Jae-yong is suspected of obstructing special duties, violating the “Presidential Guard Law,” abuse of power, forging official documents, among others. Since the charges related to the internal unrest were confirmed during the prosecutorial and police investigation phases, it is expected that the subsequent investigation will focus on his suspicions of foreign enemies crimes, including creating reasons for martial law declarations, and invading North Korean capital Pyongyang with drones to provocate the North.
