On the evening of July 13th, local time, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the establishment of an independent Judicial Investigation Committee to thoroughly investigate serious allegations of criminal groups infiltrating the law enforcement system.
On July 6th, Major General Englanira Mkhwanaji, the Police Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa, made a public accusation that a criminal group had penetrated into the internal affairs of South Africa’s law enforcement and intelligence agencies. He alleged that the current Police Minister, Seso Mchwunuzwe, was involved in interfering with police investigations.
Ramaphosa declared on the 13th that a Judicial Investigation Committee would be established to comprehensively investigate these allegations. The committee will focus on examining the activities of the criminal group within law enforcement agencies, whether the police investigations were manipulated, and the specific responsibilities of the officials involved.
At the same time, Ramaphosa announced that Police Minister Mchwunuzwe has been asked to take a temporary leave of absence, and that legal expert Filoz Kachalija will act as his deputy. Ramaphosa emphasized that the investigation must be efficient and transparent, and that the committee will submit a report within the specified timeframe to address the public’s deep concerns about national security and judicial fairness.
In his speech, Ramaphosa called on all citizens to support the investigation efforts and to jointly safeguard the foundation of South Africa’s rule of law. He stated that the South African government will never tolerate any actions that undermine the credibility of law enforcement agencies, and promised to take all necessary measures to restore public trust.
