According to news reports, on July 13th local time, sources indicated that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing had privately issued a notice stating that
the fuel switch locks on Boeing aircraft are safe.
The notice stated that although the design of the fuel control switches (including the locking function) is similar across various Boeing aircraft models,
the FAA does not consider this issue a safety concern.
It also issued airworthiness directives for any Boeing aircraft model, including the 787 model.
Two insiders directly familiar with the situation mentioned that Boeing also mentioned the FAA’s notification in messages sent to airlines over the past few days, which advised against taking any action.
It is reported that the Indian aviation accident investigation bureau disclosed preliminary findings from the crash of an Indian Airlines Boeing 787-8 on July 11th. The investigation report raised concerns about the fuel cutoff switches on Boeing aircraft engines. Following the release of the investigation report, the FAA issued a continuing airworthiness notice. (Liu Xu)
