On the evening of July 13th, local time, Yousef Aliyan, the head of civil affairs in Western Sudan’s West Kordofan State, announced that Fola and another city, Abujad, were both hit by airstrikes on the same day, resulting in a total of 15 civilian deaths and 23 injuries.
Aliyan stated that the airstrikes in Fola killed 7 civilians and injured 23; in Abujad, 8 people died. He accused the Sudanese Armed Forces of launching these attacks with fighter jets, causing civilian casualties. The Sudanese Armed Forces did not respond to this accusation.
Recently, there has been intense fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Units in various regions of Kordofan, leading to a continuous escalation of the situation. Most areas of West Kordofan are currently under Rapid Support Unit control, with the state’s civil affairs department also under their control.
On April 15, 2023, armed clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Units in the capital, Khartoum, which then spread to other areas. The ongoing two-year-plus armed conflict has resulted in nearly 30,000 deaths and more than 12 million displaced persons.
