The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a statement on the 13th, stating that an “unusually large number of gunshots” occurred near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant on the evening of the 12th, posing threats to nuclear safety and security.
The IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi, stated in the declaration that the international team stationed at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant reported that small-caliber weaponry shots were heard for about an hour starting from 10 p.m. local time on the 12th. Grossi mentioned that such military activities taking place at large nuclear power plants or their vicinity are “clearly unacceptable.”
The statement further mentioned that the team conducted a site inspection in the early hours of the 13th, noticing numerous spent cartridge cases scattered around the ground near Units 5 and 6 reactors. The team did not find any signs of broken windows or other physical damages, and is currently gathering more information about the incident.
