Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol submitted an application for a review of the appropriateness of his detention to the Seoul Central District Court on the 16th, citing “unlawful detention.”
Yoon Suk-yeol’s legal representatives stated that the application was submitted to the Seoul Central District Court on the morning of the 16th, requesting a review of the appropriateness of the former president’s detention. They argued that the detention of Yoon Suk-yeol is “illegal and unjust.”
According to Yonhap News Agency, the detention review refers to a procedure whereby the court assesses whether the detention of a suspect is lawful and whether further detention is necessary.
On December 3 last year, then-South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol issued an emergency decree. On the same day, the South Korean National Assembly passed a motion to impeach Yoon Suk-yeol, leading to the suspension of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s powers immediately. On January 15 this year, Yoon Suk-yeol was first arrested, becoming the first incumbent president in South Korean constitutional history to be arrested. On March 8, Yoon Suk-yeol was released. On April 4, the Constitutional Court of South Korea announced its decision to impeach Yoon Suk-yeol, removing him from office as president. On July 10, the Seoul Central District Court issued a warrant for arrest due to concerns about (the suspect) destroying evidence, leading to Yoon Suk-yeol’s second arrest, primarily related to charges of obstructing special duties and abuse of power.
