According to China News Service on July 17th, as reported by the “Korean National Newspaper”, South Korean President Lee Jae-myon invited 207 families of disaster victims for a comfort visit and listened to their stories on the afternoon of the 16th.
The report mentioned that the relatives of the “Seagem” shipwreck victims wore yellow vests, those of the Lee Taek-yong pedestrian crush incident wore purple vests, and those of the Jeju Airline crash victims wore blue T-shirts.
When Lee Jae-myon appeared at the venue and shook hands with the victims’ families, some closed their lips tightly, trying to hold back tears, while others handed him letters prepared in advance. Lee Jae-myon took the letters back to his seat.
Taking the microphone, Lee Jae-myon said, “As the highest responsible person in the country’s governance, I solemnly apologize on behalf of the government for failing to fulfill our duty to protect the lives and safety of our citizens.” He then stood up and bowed. The victims’ families occasionally cried, some wiped their eyes with handkerchiefs and tissues, and others applauded.
