It is understood that on the 18th, a judge of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court ruled that Bolsonaro had committed acts of coercion against the judiciary, obstructed justice, and openly threatened national sovereignty, ordering restrictions on Bolsonaro. He must wear an electronic ankle monitor for monitoring his movements; he is not allowed to leave his home between 7 p.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. the next day, weekends, and holidays; in addition, he is prohibited from contacting foreign officials or diplomats, and using social media.
“This is a great humiliation,” Bolsonaro said after being fitted with the electronic ankle monitor, “I never thought about leaving Brazil, nor did I ever want to go to the embassy. But these preventive measures are based on these reasons.”
Furthermore, according to France’s 24 News Channel, in response to the United States’ threats to impose sanctions on the Brazilian Federal Court judges handling Bolsonaro’s case, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula voiced condemnation of the U.S. actions on the 19th local time, describing them as “arbitrary and without basis,” and as a violation of Brazil’s national sovereignty.
Bolsonaro was previously criminally charged for attempting a coup following the defeat in the 2022 presidential election. The charges included organizing armed crimes, attempting to violently overthrow democracy and the rule of law, coups, threats of violence, and damage to public property. If all charges are proven, the sentence could exceed 40 years. During the trial, Bolsonaro made several statements through social media, insisting it was a “political persecution.”
Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Brazil would be subject to a 50% tariff on imports, demanding that Brazil stop its investigation into Bolsonaro’s legal proceedings, which has led to strong dissatisfaction from both the Brazilian government and public opinion. Brazilian President Lula resolutely responded to the U.S. interference in domestic affairs, emphasizing that Brazil will firmly defend its sovereignty and judicial independence.
