According to reports from Yonhap News Agency, on July 19th local time, the Independent Prosecutors’ Office (IPA) in South Korea, responsible for investigating cases of internal rebellion and treason, filed a public prosecution against former President Yoon Suk-yeol. Yoon Suk-yeol will be tried in custody.
Among the three IPA units investigating suspicions about the couple of Yoon Suk-yeol, the IPA charged him with abuse of power, obstructing rights, forging official documents, violating the “Presidential Archives Act,” and using special means to hinder the execution of official duties.
On June 6th this month, the IPA requested the Seoul Central District Court to issue an arrest warrant for Yoon Suk-yeol. On the 10th, the court issued an arrest warrant. After being arrested, the IPA repeatedly requested Yoon Suk-yeol to appear in court for questioning, but he refused due to health issues. Consequently, the IPA attempted to compel him to appear in court, but the Seoul Detention Center was unable to enforce the order due to difficulties in exerting coercive force over the former president. Subsequently, Yoon Suk-yeol applied to the court for a review of the legality of his arrest, which was rejected.
The report notes that although Yoon Suk-yeol’s detention period following his arrest is up to 20 days, due to his uncooperative attitude and hostile behavior towards the investigation, the IPA believes that it would be meaningless to summon him again. Therefore, they initiated a public prosecution on the 9th day after his arrest.
