On July 19th, local time,
It has been learned that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is accelerating the construction of tent-style immigration detention centers across the country following the acquisition of $45 billion in funding. The goal is to increase the capacity from the current 40,000 beds to 100,000 by the end of 2025.
ICE is prioritizing the establishment of large tent facilities at military bases and existing ICE detention centers, involving some tent facilities located in Texas, Colorado, Indiana, and New Jersey. Senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security, including Secretary of Homeland Security Chris Van Hollen, have expressed a preference for state and local governments controlled by Republicans to manage detention centers rather than private prison companies.
It is reported that Van Hollen had mentioned last week in Florida that negotiations are underway with five Republican-led states to consider establishing other residency sites modeled after the “Crocodile Devil Island” detention center in Florida. However, specific details about which states are involved were not disclosed. (Zhao Miao, CCTV)
