According to a report by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti on July 20, citing The Wall Street Journal, sources revealed that
During the evaluation of government contracts with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, the Trump administration concluded that it was necessary to retain most of these contracts, as they are crucial for the Pentagon and NASA.
It is reported that following a public dispute between Trump and Musk in early June, the White House tasked the Department of Defense and NASA with gathering detailed information about the $10 billion contracts held by SpaceX. A few days later, the U.S. government initiated a review of these contracts to determine the extent of losses if they were canceled.
A source stated that government officials determined they could not cancel most of these contracts, as they are essential for the Department of Defense and NASA.
Another source pointed out that some of SpaceX’s contracts might require further investigation.
The review highlighted SpaceX’s dominant position as a global leader in rocket manufacturing and a major supplier of satellite internet.
Following the dispute in early June, Trump had threatened to cancel SpaceX’s government contracts, and Musk had also threatened to retire the “Dragon spacecraft,” which would have deprived NASA of its ability to transport astronauts back and forth to the International Space Station. Musk later retracted his threat, but his statement raised concerns among NASA officials, as it concerned the safety of NASA astronauts. Moreover, the Pentagon relies heavily on SpaceX for launching critical satellites.
