According to a report by CNN on July 22nd, an American orange juice importer stated that the tariff policy of the Trump administration against Brazil could lead to a 25% increase in the price of orange juice at major U.S. supermarkets. The company has filed a lawsuit with the U.S. International Trade Court.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that Brazil is the world’s largest producer of orange juice, accounting for 75% of global exports and supplying over 50% of the United States’ orange juice needs. According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price of a 355-milliliter bottle of frozen concentrated orange juice was $4.49 in June, marking a 55% increase from 2022 and setting a new historical high.
Johnna Food Company, an American orange juice importer and seller, mentioned that the U.S. government’s imposition of a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods would impose an annual additional cost of nearly $70 million on the company, surpassing any profit it had made in the past 30 years. The company will be forced to pass this burden on to consumers, leading to a significant rise in prices. Last week, the company filed a lawsuit with the U.S. International Trade Court, claiming that President Trump’s announcement of imposing a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods posed a threat to its business operations, and that Trump’s reasons for imposing tariffs on Brazil did not comply with relevant legal regulations.
