On July 23, the spokesperson for the European Commission, Olaf Scholz, confirmed that if trade negotiations between the EU and the United States break down, and the US imposes high tariffs on EU goods, the EU plans to quickly impose tariffs on nearly 100 billion euros worth of US goods.
“Although our primary task is negotiation, we are also continuing to prepare for all possible outcomes, including taking additional retaliatory measures,” said Scholz.
Scholz stated that as part of the first round of retaliatory measures, the EU will merge the previously proposed list of retaliatory tariffs against 21 billion euros worth of US goods with the recently proposed additional retaliatory tariffs list covering 72 billion euros worth of US goods into a unified plan. This plan will be approved by EU member states. If negotiations break down, the retaliatory measures will take effect starting from August 7. (Xinhua News Agency)
