On July 22nd, local time, the governors of Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta signed a memorandum of understanding to decide on the construction of a new trans-provincial oil pipeline.
Ontario is Canada’s largest economic province, while Saskatchewan and Alberta are two major oil-producing provinces. The new oil pipeline planned by the three provinces will replace the current 5th Line pipeline, which no longer passes through the United States.
The 5th Line pipeline, a long oil pipeline stretching over more than 1000 kilometers, transports 540,000 barrels of oil and natural gas liquid daily, passing through Wisconsin and Michigan states in the United States before reaching the refinery in Satina, Ontario.
Ontario’s Governor Ford stated, “The Governor of Michigan has continuously threatened to cut off the 5th Line. We can no longer take such risks. We need independence, we need a pipeline that leads to our refineries in southwestern Ontario, and we need to be self-sufficient.” Ford added, “We cannot rely on Americans anymore. It’s that simple.”
Saskatchewan’s Governor Moy expressed, “As Canadians, we should not allow this situation where we depend on another country to happen to us.” (CCTV Zhang Sen)
