On the afternoon of July 23, local time, German Chancellor Merkel received French President Macron in Berlin. This marks the first visit by Macron to Germany since the establishment of the new German government.
In his speech before the meeting began, Merkel stated that the meeting was timely and would discuss some current hot topics, such as trade policy, foreign and security policies, and some joint projects that both countries have already discussed and are advancing. Merkel also mentioned that this meeting would prepare for the ministerial council meeting in Toulon, France, at the end of August, where cabinet members from both countries will discuss key issues of cooperation between France and Germany. In her speech, Merkel emphasized the importance of the bilateral relationship between Germany and France, stating that it is their responsibility to continue the friendship built over decades.
Macron expressed in his speech that both countries are increasing their investment in defense and security. Whether it’s the next-generation fighter jet project or future main battle tanks, these crucial joint plans will strengthen strategic coordination between the two countries and enhance security. At the same time, both sides intend to deepen their investments in fields such as artificial intelligence, green technology, energy transition, and quantum technology.
Macron stated that France and Germany will continue to inject momentum into the development process of Europe. Both countries believe that Europe needs to improve its competitiveness, simplify processes, efficiently implement them, and quickly invest in critical systems to build a more resilient and capable Europe that can face major challenges.
Regarding trade, Macron said that based on continuous consultations with European countries including Italy and the European Commission President recently, France and Germany will further coordinate their positions during this meeting to jointly develop a plan to respond to the US tariff offensive. The two sides have a consistent stance on this matter: pursuing stability and as low a level of tariffs as possible while ensuring respect as trading partners.
Moreover, Macron highlighted that crisis and security issues are equally important. During this meeting, both sides will also discuss the situation in Ukraine and the European defense issue, Middle East issue, and Iran nuclear issue under the current severe background. (CCTV Zhang Yunfan)
