Xinhua, Phnom Penh, July 25th (by Wu Changwei) – The Cambodian Mine Action and Aid to Victims Administration announced on the 25th that Thai military forces have used banned cluster munitions in border areas within Cambodia.
The statement highlighted that the cluster munitions used by Thai forces in the province of Poipet pose a “direct and undifferentiated” threat to civilians, mine-clearing personnel, and the community. “This act severely violates international humanitarian norms.”
A senior official from the Cambodian Mine Action and Aid to Victims Administration, Le Tu, stated that the use of cluster munitions in border areas or near them is an “unacceptable escalation,” completely disregarding human life, humanitarian principles, and regional peace.
Conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand erupted on the border on the 24th and 25th, with both sides accusing each other of violating international law. The United Nations Security Council will hold a closed meeting on the 25th regarding the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. (End)
