July 25th, the Chinese Consulate in Melbourne reminded its consular district Chinese citizens to enhance their personal safety precautions:
Recently, incidents of violence against Chinese tourists in Hobart’s central city by local teenagers have occurred in Tasmania, posing a threat to the personal safety of those residing there. Following these events, the consulate took them very seriously and immediately contacted the assaulted tourists to inquire about their injuries and offer condolences. The consulate also expressed gratitude to the restaurant manager who had bravely intervened to rescue the tourists.
The individuals involved in the incident have been identified by the Tasmanian Police and will be transferred to legal proceedings.
The Consulate in Melbourne advises its consular district Chinese citizens and students to closely monitor local news and stay informed about public safety, avoid traveling at night as much as possible, and enhance their awareness of personal safety measures and self-protection capabilities. If they encounter strangers verbally provoking or physically attacking, it is advised to avoid direct confrontation and try to quickly leave the situation, and to call the Australian police emergency number “000” if necessary.
