The World Health Organization warned on the 25th that the Chikungunya virus is spreading globally, with 119 countries reporting cases and approximately 5.5 million people at risk of infection. Symptoms include high fever, severe joint pain, and long-term fatigue. About 40% of patients may experience disability for several months or even years, with a very rare case potentially fatal.
Dr. Rojas Alvarez, head of the Vector-Borne Virus Program at the WHO, pointed out that about one-third of the population in La Réunion Island, an overseas department of France, is infected. The situation is similar to the large outbreaks in the Indian Ocean region 20 years ago. Cases have been reported in Asia and Europe, including in northern Italy.
Currently, there are two vaccines available worldwide, but they are mainly used by travelers. The WHO is assisting countries in enhancing laboratory testing capabilities, medical training, and epidemic monitoring, and plans to establish a strategic advisory group to develop prevention and control recommendations. Experts remind that the key to prevention lies in controlling the breeding grounds of mosquitoes, especially in tropical countries and high-risk areas. (Yang Chun)
