The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change in Turkey announced on the 26th that a record high temperature was recorded across 132 weather stations on July 25. Among these, the city of Silapi in the southeastern part of the country recorded a temperature of 50.5 degrees Celsius, setting a new national record for high temperatures. Silapi is located in the province of Shalunkak, approximately 10 kilometers away from the Turkish border with Iraq and Syria. Turkey’s previous record high temperature was set in August 2023 at 49.5 degrees Celsius.
A heatwave has led to numerous wildfires across Turkey. Firefighters have been battling a wildfire in the northern Karabik Province for four consecutive days, forcing residents of several villages to evacuate.
Wildfires in the central Eskishehir Province on the 23rd resulted in 10 deaths and 14 injuries.
According to data from the Turkish government, hundreds of wildfires occurred in the country between the end of June and the beginning of July, leading to emergency evacuations of large numbers of people.
