【Report】The US Newsweek, citing the Israeli public broadcasting company KAN on the 28th, reported that two US citizens were detained in Iran for alleged spying activities on behalf of Israel after the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran last month.
According to Newsweek, one of them is a Jewish American with Iranian ancestry from Los Angeles and has recently been released on bail. The other is a resident of New York and is still in custody. Both were arrested during a visit to Iran. At the time of their arrest, Iran was conducting operations against individuals suspected of collaborating with Israel.
The report stated that after last month’s conflict with Israel, Iran had arrested at least 35 Jews, including the two Americans, who were suspected of engaging in espionage activities. Newsweek said such actions could exacerbate tensions between the US and Iran.
The report mentioned that Homayun Samia Najafabadi, an Iranian parliament member of Jewish ethnicity, said he had ensured the release of some of the detainees and confirmed that the espionage charges against those detained in Tehran had been withdrawn. He added that some of them had been released on bail, and he hoped other detainees could be released soon.
In addition, Iranian President Pezehiqian urged officials from Iran’s judiciary and intelligence departments to alleviate the anxiety of overseas Iranians, stating, “These people are also the wealth of this land.”
According to a report by Iran’s FARS news agency on June 25th, during the 12 days of Israel’s attack on Iran, Iranian intelligence and security forces had arrested over 700 people suspected of spying for Israel. The provinces with the highest number of arrests were Isfahan, Kermanshah, Fars, and Lorestan.
These individuals suspected of spying for Israel conducted sabotage activities by manipulating drones, making homemade bombs, photographing sensitive military areas, and providing intelligence to the Israeli military. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that more than 10,000 drones had been seized in Tehran alone.
