On the 27th local time, following the announcement by President Trump of a significant trade agreement between the European Union and the United States, Commissioner for the European Union Ursula von der Leyen explained some of her decisions in the EU’s trade negotiations with the US.
Von der Leyen stated that the EU is still overly dependent on Russian liquefied natural gas, making it very popular to import more affordable liquefied natural gas from the United States.
Regarding tariff arrangements, von der Leyen confirmed that the tariff rate for the automotive industry in the agreement has been uniformly set at 15%. She mentioned that the 15% tariff level is the best outcome that the European Commission can achieve under the current circumstances.
Furthermore, she confirmed that the EU and the US have reached an agreement on the pharmaceutical industry, implementing a unified 15% tariff rate. Von der Leyen acknowledged that the EU and the US have not yet made a decision on the spirits sector, and details of the trade agreement signed that day will be published in the coming weeks.
