Due to a strong earthquake occurring near the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia on July 30th, local time, the Chilean National Disaster Prevention and Response Center issued an alert on the same day, demanding that residents in coastal areas evacuate to safe zones.
According to the announcement released by the center, the entire Chilean coastline could be affected from the northernmost area of Arica and Parinacota District to the southernmost region of Magellan-Chilean Antarctica. The tsunami waves are expected to reach the country’s westernmost point, Easter Island, at 11:25 local time (23:25 Beijing time) on the 30th.
On the same day, Chilean President Michel Borrelly posted on social media, stating that the first wave of the tsunami is usually not the most destructive, and he urged the public to remain calm as per government instructions.
